Education FAQ

Frequently asked questions about PAI® certification programs and instructor training

Quick Navigation

Prerequisites & Requirements

Q: Do I need prior Pilates experience to enroll?

No prior Pilates experience is required. Our programs are designed to take you from complete beginner to certified instructor. However, we recommend taking a few Pilates classes before starting your certification to familiarize yourself with the movement vocabulary.

Q: Is the ABP course really mandatory for everyone?

Yes, the ABP (Anatomy, Biomechanics & Posture Analysis) course is mandatory for all first-time PAI® students. This 12-hour foundation course covers:

  • Human anatomy essentials
  • Biomechanics principles
  • Postural analysis techniques
  • Movement assessment fundamentals

Exception: Licensed physiotherapists and medical professionals may bypass ABP by passing a placement test.

Q: What physical fitness level do I need?

You should be able to participate in moderate physical activity and have no major injuries that would prevent you from learning and demonstrating Pilates exercises. You don’t need to be super fit, but basic physical capability is important since you’ll be learning and practicing movements throughout the training.

Q: Which course should I take first after ABP?

We recommend starting with All Populations Mat I (APM I) as it provides the fundamental Pilates repertoire and teaching methodology. However, you may also begin with All Populations Reformer I (APR I) depending on your interests and goals. Both are solid starting points after completing ABP.

Q: Do I need to complete Level I before starting Level II?

Yes, Level II courses are advanced programs that build upon Level I foundations. You must complete the corresponding Level I course before enrolling in Level II. For example, complete APM I before taking APM II, and APR I before APR II.

Course Scheduling & Flexibility

Q: How are courses scheduled?

We offer flexible scheduling options to accommodate different lifestyles:

  • Weekend Intensives: Saturday–Sunday, 9 AM – 6 PM, one weekend per month
  • Weekday Sessions: Morning (9 AM – 1 PM), Afternoon (2 PM – 6 PM), Evening (6:30 PM – 9:30 PM)
  • Private Courses: Customized scheduling for individuals or small groups, intensive blocks for faster completion

Q: What happens if I miss class hours?

100% attendance is mandatory for certification. If you miss any hours:

  • You must arrange private review sessions with a master trainer
  • Private review sessions are charged separately — please enquire for the current rate
  • Missing more than 12 hours requires auditing the entire course
  • Course auditing is subject to availability

Q: How long does it take to complete a certification?

Each course includes a set number of in-class hours (e.g., All Populations Mat I: 40 hours, All Populations Reformer I: 50 hours), plus required self-practice, observation, and practice teaching hours that must be completed before taking the exam. Most students complete Mat I requirements and are ready for testing within about 3 months if they practice consistently. Reformer I typically adds another 3 months. Full-time apprentices who practice and study daily can usually complete both Mat I and Reformer I and test within 6 months. Your exact timeline will depend on how consistently you log your practice and observation hours.

Q: Can I take multiple courses simultaneously?

While possible, we generally recommend focusing on one course at a time to ensure quality learning and manageable practice requirements. If you’re very committed and have significant time available, you may discuss taking concurrent courses with our education team.

Q: Are there make-up classes if I fall behind on outside requirements?

We offer a comprehensive Mentorship Program (enquire for current rate) that helps you complete observation, practice teaching, and personal study hours. Individual packages are also available: 10 hours of observation or 10 hours of studio usage.

Certification Process

Q: What are the exam requirements?

Before taking any certification exam, you must:

  • Complete 100% of class attendance
  • Finish all required outside hours (practice teaching, observation, personal review)
  • Submit logged hours on exam day
  • Take the exam within one year of course completion

Level I courses: Written exam (80% pass required) + Practical exam (pass/fail)

Level II courses: Practical exam only (pass/fail)

Q: How much do certification exams cost?
